PETER KIEWIT FOUNDATION PARTNERS WITH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION TO PROVIDE EMERGENCY RELIEF GRANT FUNDS
NEWS RELEASE
February 9, 2012
The Kearney Area Community Foundation announced they will partner with the Peter Kiewit Foundation to distribute $22,000 in emergency relief grant funds.
Since the ice storm in December 2006/January 2007, the Community Foundation has distributed $72,000 of Peter Kiewit Foundation emergency grant funds to agencies in the Kearney Area, as well as other funds contributed by local businesses and individuals.
The Peter Kiewit Foundation invited Kearney Area Community Foundation to partner in this effort based on its geographic location, organizational reputation, and administrative capacity to provide good stewardship of Mr. Kiewit’s charitable dollars. Judi Sickler, Executive Director of Kearney Area Community Foundation said, “We are proud to partner with the Peter Kiewit Foundation in distributing these grant funds for another year. ”
Lyn Wallin Ziegenbein, Executive Director of the Peter Kiewit Foundation said in a letter to the Kearney Area Community Foundation that “Our Trustees are heartened to know that agencies like yours are able to assist our fellow Nebraskans most when they are most in need. ”
Relief funds have been designated to help organizations with established practices meet essential human needs during these difficult economic times and cold prairie winter months. Sickler said, “The Kearney Area Community Foundation has identified recipient agencies and will work directly with these program directors to meet emergency food, housing and energy assistance needs in the Kearney area. We will be providing assistance through Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska, the Kearney office of the Salvation Army, the SAFE Center and the Kearney Jubilee Center as they currently work together to help our community folks in need.”
Grant funds will be used to supply food banks or food pantries, assist in the payment of heat utility bills, and offer emergency shelter and short term transitional housing (30- 60 days) and basic emergency clothing and household supplies.
Area agencies have had to deal with major cuts in governmental funds supporting their emergency assistance programs. The grant from the Peter Kiewit Foundation will allow these agencies to continue to meet the needs of families without a large gap in goods or services.
“We also encourage local businesses and individuals to continue to financially
support the local agencies helping our friends and neighbors in need. It is up to all of us
to help those in our community that are hungry, cold or near homeless. “Sickler said,
“Although we recognize that the need is likely to be far greater than the assistance we
are able to provide, we are hopeful more families will remain safe, nourished and warm
in their own homes through the winter and spring months. We are blessed to have the
generous support of the Kiewit Foundation yet again in our community. “
